Tattoos

I can't guarantee another themed series of posts right now, but geeking out over Firefly yesterday made me consider writing this post. For the past few years, I've considered getting a tattoo, or two. While money is an issue, the real thing holding me back is that I really want it/them on my wrist(s). While I feel like this *shouldn't* be a problem, the sad truth is that not all businesses are as open minded as I am. So this idea is on hold until I can guarantee that I won't be needing a conventional job.

Now, one of my first loves was the early PC game Myst. I played and beat the game in kindergarten at the wee age of five. I then went on to grab the three books that were released, the two comics, the 3D remake, RealMyst, the four direct sequels, the stand alone game, URU, the two expansion packs for URU, and all the incarnations of the MMO aspect that was supposed to be standard in URU when it was released. (Which wasn't standard.)

So, now that we've established that I'm a bit of a fanboy, let me post the design for the tattoo I want. Thanks to Ian A. A. Watson who did the legwork for the translation. I lost my research folder that I made when I first thought of getting this, but I believe he even contacted Rand Miller (the creator of Myst.) to verify the translation.

This is the quote, "Perhaps the ending has not yet been written." translated to D'ni. The quote is a well known line from the opening scene in the game, but more than that, if you take it out of context, it's basically saying, "No matter how bad shit gets, it's not over." Also, for those that don't know, D'ni is a made up language that was created for the Myst franchise. While Mr. Watson used the Falling Man found on the cover of Myst as a dividing piece to separate the beginning and end of the text, I'm wanting to use the Moity Dagger as mine.

Taking this one step further, there's UV ink that you can use that only glows under UV light. This, alone is relatively new, but even more recent is the opportunity to get clear UV ink that shines as colors other than purple. (Before, if you got colored UV ink, it looked a little pale, but was still very noticeable under normal light.) So, IF I can get clear - yellow/gold UV ink, and IF it can be applied over black ink (Obviously, after the first tattoo has healed.) then I would like to get that applied over the D'ni text.

Now, like I said previously, I keep thinking of my right wrist as being the perfect location for this. But even if I did work for myself, or found some permanent employer that didn't care, then I would need to balance this tatto with something on my left wrist. I'm not married to any ideas yet, but right now, the closest thing I've come to a decsition is getting something in viking runes, with Mjǫlnir as the dividing piece.

So, what about you? Any tattoos that you have, or want to get?

  1. I've been wanting tattoos for a while. I'm afraid I'll get addicted to it, though. A lot of people that are covered in tattoos say getting tattoos is addicting as hell. But like you said, money is an issue for me. Also I just got hired at a grocery store stocking food, so I can't exactly be walking around with a shit load of tattoos. Or even just a sleeve tat.

Not to mention, the kind of things that I'd want to get are mostly horror themed(big shocker, I know) and stuff the general public wouldn't find appropriate.

Some day when I have enough saved up, I'm gonna draw something badass to get tattooed on myself. Then regret it forever and ever and ever.

    Yeah, that'll be fucking awesome.

  3. I had the idea for awhile in college, then I got over it. It still is a nice idea, but the appeal of it has sort of worn off. There are some pretty cool tats out there though.

  7. don't do tat's on your wrists... Its good that it's held you back so far, think about it very clearly, (and when wearing a suit, make sure then don't come out under the jacket).
=) But then again i'm a guy that would never do a tattoo, so maybe you should not take advice from me =)

  9. I have several tattoos on my arms and chest. All hidden. People never know I have tattoos until I take my shirt off. I like it that way. People always suddenly think I'm more bad ass, and it doesn't give off that negative connotation of a tattooed person in the work place. So if you must have them on your wrists do it, but if you can bare to hide them it is also worth it.

  10. I have a few tatts that I want but, like you said, cash has always been the issue for me. Im turning 25 in a month and have convinced Dad to pay for my first tatt, also I think it's good to get them when your a little older to make sure you get something you really want! Nothing worse than regretted ink.

  13. This is the kind of stuff I like. Something that looks great but is off the wall with very few people knowing the origin at a glance.

I love the quote and the idea for the seperator being the dagger sounds cool.

I've considered tattoos in the past, but likewise am holding back to see how business career branches out and I have been unable to find something I would be happy to keep forever. The UV tat really seems like a good option though
